Papanikolis Cave to Afales — Ithaca's Hidden Route

By AURA Private Yachting ·

Ithaca is a 9-hour private cruise from Nydri — time enough for the Papanikolis Cave at Meganisi, the harbour of Vathy and the island's secluded coves. Private vessel, up to 11 guests, €650 · 1–11 guests.

Some islands carry a weight beyond their geography. Ithaca — the mythical home of Odysseus, the island of return, the destination that gave the world its most enduring metaphor for journey — sits quietly in the southern Ionian, largely unchanged, largely undiscovered by mass tourism. Reaching it by private boat, cruising through the extraordinary waters of Meganisi and the unspoiled uninhabited shores of Atokos, is one of the most meaningful ways to experience the Greek sea.

Departure Points

Your Ithaca voyage begins from one of two boarding locations:

From Nydri, Lefkada — the ideal starting point, just minutes from Meganisi. Your voyage unfolds organically, island by island, southward through some of the most sheltered and beautiful waters in the Ionian.

From Preveza Port — a longer crossing through open Ionian water, rewarded with the full breadth of the sea and arriving at Meganisi from the north — a dramatic and memorable approach.

Your captain will advise on timing and conditions for each departure point.

The Route — Five Extraordinary Stops

Meganisi – Papanikolis Cave

Your first stop is Meganisi — just fifteen minutes from Nydri, yet a world entirely apart. The island hides the spectacular Papanikolis Cave: a sea cavern so vast that the WWII Greek submarine for which it is named sheltered here entirely. Cruising inside, the water turns an extraordinary luminous azure, lit from below by sunlight filtering through the entrance. It is one of the most photographed natural phenomena in the Ionian — and from a private boat, you have it to yourselves.

Atokos

Between Meganisi and Ithaca lies Atokos — unspoiled, uninhabited, and entirely untouched. No roads reach its shores. No hotels, no restaurants, no permanent residents. Only limestone cliffs descending into water of extraordinary depth and clarity, and a silence so complete it feels actively present. Anchoring here, you are at the furthest remove from the modern world that the Ionian can offer.

Porto Vathy

Arriving at the southern coast of Ithaca, your captain anchors at Porto Vathy — a small, perfectly sheltered bay of white pebbles and luminously clear water, with forested hillsides rising steeply from the shore. This is Ithaca at its most intimate: no facilities, no crowds, only the sound of water and the particular quality of light that the island's mountains seem to concentrate toward the sea.

Kioni Harbour (Lunch)

The small harbour of Kioni, on Ithaca's northern coast, is one of the most beautiful in the Ionian — a horseshoe bay with traditional windmills on the headland and a waterfront of exceptional character. Lunch here is at one of the handful of tavernas that have served this village for generations: fresh-caught fish, local wine, and an atmosphere of profound calm that makes it difficult to imagine leaving.

Afales Beach

In the far north of Ithaca, Afales is a wide, wild bay facing open sea — dramatic in character, with a long stretch of pebbles and water that shifts from turquoise in the shallows to deep blue in the channel. The surrounding landscape is typically Ithacian: steep limestone slopes, ancient terracing, and an absence of development that makes the bay feel genuinely remote. A final swim here, before the return to Nydri, closes a day that has moved through four distinct worlds.

The Mythology of the Journey

Ithaca has been a destination for three thousand years. In the Odyssey, it represents not just a place but a state of mind — the end of a long journey, the return to what matters most. There is something quietly profound about arriving at Ithaca by sea, as travellers have done since antiquity. We have watched guests step ashore at Vathy and feel something shift — a recognition, perhaps, that some places carry meaning beyond their coordinates.

When to Go

The Ithaca cruise operates May through October. June and September are ideal — the Maistros (summer wind) is gentler, the sea is warm, and the anchorages less crowded. July and August are magnificent in their intensity; early departures secure the best spots at Meganisi cave and Atokos before other vessels arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Papanikolis Cave always accessible?

The cave is accessible in all but the roughest sea conditions. Its sheltered position means it remains open even on days with a moderate swell. Your captain will always assess conditions before entry.

Can we spend more time in Ithaca?

Of course. This is a private voyage — the itinerary is a guide, not a contract. If your party wants to linger in Vathy harbour or explore a second anchorage in Ithaca, your captain will make it happen.

Is Atokos safe for swimming?

Atokos offers exceptional swimming in deep, crystal-clear water. The anchorage is sheltered from prevailing winds, and visibility often exceeds 20 metres. It is one of the most spectacular swimming stops in our entire repertoire.

Can we combine Ithaca with Paxos?

For a custom multi-day experience, absolutely. Contact us to design a bespoke itinerary that combines Ithaca, Atokos, and the extraordinary sea caves of Paxos.

Can we enter the Papanikolis Cave on Meganisi?

Yes — the Papanikolis Cave on Meganisi is the first stop on this route and one of its most extraordinary moments. Entry by private boat is possible in all but rough conditions, and the AURA vessel is well suited to the cave entrance. Your captain will always assess conditions before entering. The cave is best experienced in the morning light.
