For full-day cruises (Lefkada, Paxos, Ithaca), an early morning departure at 09:00 gives the best experience: calm sea, fewer boats at beaches, cooler temperatures. For sunset cruises, departing at 17:00-18:00 gives perfect golden-hour light without a late return. Afternoon departures (12:00-14:00) are generally the worst — peak heat, choppier water, crowded anchorages.
Morning (07:00-10:00): the best window for full-day cruises
Three things happen in the morning that make it the optimal departure window for longer cruises.
The sea is calm. In the Ionian, afternoon wind patterns — the local thermal wind or the meltemi in peak summer — create waves that build through the day. Mornings are almost always glassy. This matters for passenger comfort, especially for children or anyone prone to seasickness, and for the ability to anchor safely at exposed beaches.
Beaches are empty. The organized day trips from Lefkada, Preveza and Corfu typically depart between 09:00 and 10:00. A private boat leaving at 09:00 arrives at Porto Katsiki, Voutoumi, or Egremni before the group tours. The difference between arriving at 09:30 and 11:30 is the difference between having the beach to yourself and joining a crowd.
The heat is manageable. July and August afternoons reach 38-40°C on exposed boat decks. The morning window — before the sun is at full intensity — makes the sailing portions of the cruise genuinely pleasant rather than something to endure under a canopy.
For Lefkada, Paxos, Ithaca and Kefalonia cruises, the departure time is 09:00. You arrive at the first locations before crowds form, use the cooler morning hours for the longer passages, and have the afternoon at anchor in sheltered spots.
Midday (11:00-15:00): avoid it if you can
The midday window has almost nothing to recommend it for open-water cruising.
The sun is directly overhead — maximum UV exposure, maximum heat, flat unflattering light for photography. The Ionian afternoon wind has typically started building by 12:00-13:00, creating short choppy waves that make passages uncomfortable without being rough enough to prevent travel. Popular beaches are at maximum capacity from noon to 14:00, when the day trip boats converge.
If your logistics force an afternoon departure — arriving from somewhere else, late transport connections — consider a sunset cruise instead of a shortened full-day itinerary. Three hours of good conditions at the right time of day beats five hours starting from the worst.
Sunset (17:00-20:30): purpose-built for short cruises
AURA's Sunset Cruise typically departs around 17:00-18:00 and runs for three hours. This window has a specific character that justifies its own itinerary.
The afternoon thermal wind usually calms down by 16:00-17:00 as the land cools, returning the sea to the glassy condition it had in the morning. Temperature drops to the comfortable range. The light turns gold — the same golden hour that photographers chase — and this light transforms the Ionian coastline in a way that midday sun never does.
For couples, for travellers who only have an evening free, or for families with young children who need to be back before dark, the sunset cruise is the ideal format.
Seasonal differences
May-June: The meltemi is absent or weak. Mornings and afternoons are both calm. You can afford a later departure (09:30-10:00) without losing the advantages. These months have the calmest sea conditions of the season.
July-August: Peak meltemi risk. Morning departures become more important, not less. Book the 09:00 slot if you care about sea conditions.
September-October: Wind decreases significantly. Sea temperature is still warm for swimming (24-26°C). Crowds thin dramatically. Both morning and afternoon cruises work well, and the light in September has a particular quality — lower angle, warmer tone — that summer can't match.
Practical note: where to meet
AURA cruises depart from Preveza (the main base) or Nydri on Lefkada, depending on the destination. Early morning departures at 09:00 mean meeting at the boat around 08:45. For most visitors staying in Lefkada or Preveza, this is a short drive or taxi ride.
