The Cyclades (Santorini, Mykonos, Paros) suit travellers who want whitewashed architecture, nightlife, and iconic Instagram shots. The Ionian Islands (Lefkada, Paxos, Ithaca, Kefalonia) suit those looking for green lush islands, quieter beaches, calmer water, and a boat-based holiday. The Ionian is generally less crowded and more affordable.
Two completely different Greek islands experiences
Greece is not one destination — it's dozens, and the choice between the Ionian and the Cyclades is one of the most consequential decisions in Greek holiday planning. Both are beautiful; they are not interchangeable. This comparison is honest about what each delivers.
Landscape
Cyclades: Dry, rocky, stripped bare by sun and wind. White cube architecture, blue domes, volcanic caldera, black sand beaches. The Cyclades look exactly like the Greece of postcards and travel magazines — instantly recognizable, deliberately photogenic. Santorini's caldera is genuinely extraordinary. So is the pressure to experience it alongside thousands of other people.
Ionian: Green, forested, Mediterranean in the proper sense. Olive groves, pine forests, cypress trees. The landscape looks more like Italy or coastal Croatia than the Cyclades. The water colour — particularly at Antipaxos and Lefkada's west coast — is more vivid turquoise than anything in the Cyclades, because the seabed and water clarity are different. Less iconic on a postcard, more beautiful in person.
Sea conditions
Cyclades: The meltemi — the dominant northerly wind of the Aegean — blows hard through July and August, sometimes reaching force 6-7. Rough sea days are common. Sailing in the Cyclades is traditional partly because it's necessary: the distances between islands require overnight passages, and the wind is a fact of life rather than an anomaly.
Ionian: The meltemi doesn't reach the Ionian with the same force. The sea is calmer on average, particularly in the morning. For day boat cruises — the kind that last one day and return to base — the Ionian is significantly more reliable. You can plan a Paxos cruise for next Tuesday with much higher confidence than you could plan an equivalent Cycladic passage.
Crowds
The scale difference is large. Santorini receives approximately 3 million visitors per year. Mykonos receives a similar number. In August, the ferry terminals, cliff-top paths, and Oia sunset spots are overwhelmed.
Ithaca — Homer's island, historically and geographically significant, genuinely beautiful — receives more visitors in a week than Mykonos gets in a busy afternoon. Even the busiest Ionian beach (Porto Katsiki on Lefkada) is quiet compared to popular Cycladic beaches.
Prices
Santorini and Mykonos are among the most expensive island destinations in the Mediterranean. Cave suites in Oia cost €600-1,200 per night. Restaurant meals for two with wine regularly exceed €80-100. Day trips are priced at a premium.
The Ionian runs significantly cheaper. Good accommodation in Lefkada town is available for €80-150 per night in peak season. Taverna meals with fresh fish and wine come in at €25-40 per person. Private boat cruises split among a group make day trips very affordable.
For boat trips specifically
The Cyclades are primarily a sailing destination — multi-day passages between islands, overnight in harbours, the rhythm of wind and tide. Day cruises exist but the distances and sea conditions make them a more variable proposition.
The Ionian is built for day cruising. From a single base (Preveza or Nydri), you can reach Lefkada, Paxos, Ithaca, and Kefalonia — all world-class destinations — in day trips. The calm morning sea, the short distances, and the quality of swimming spots make this format ideal.
Who chooses what
Cyclades: travellers wanting iconic architecture, cosmopolitan nightlife, the Santorini sunset experience, and don't mind crowds and prices.
Ionian: families, couples who prefer landscape over nightlife, groups wanting a boat-based holiday, and anyone who values quiet over profile.
The Ionian also makes a strong argument on value — similar or better natural beauty, significantly lower prices, much smaller crowds, and a boat cruise culture that the Cyclades can't replicate at the same day-trip scale.
