Fiskardo & Hidden Beaches — Kefalonia's Quiet North

By AURA Private Yachting ·

Kefalonia is a 9-hour private cruise from Nydri — time enough for Fiskardo's Venetian harbour, the secluded beaches of Dafnoudi, Afales, Koimilia and Nitsi, and the extraordinary clarity of northern Kefalonia's waters. Fully private vessel, up to 11 guests, __FROM_PRICE__.

Kefalonia: The Ionian's Most Dramatic Island

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands and, in the opinion of many who know the Ionian well, its most extraordinary. The landscape is wilder here — steeper mountains, denser forests, longer beaches. The water is among the clearest in the Mediterranean.

Most visitors who come to Kefalonia do so by ferry or short-hop flight, arriving in the south or centre of the island. The north — the peninsula of Érissos, where our cruise takes you — remains a different world entirely: quiet, unspoiled, and accessible in its finest stretches only from the sea.

Fiskardo: The Village That Survived

Fiskardo occupies a place apart in Kefalonian history. In 1953, a catastrophic earthquake struck the Ionian islands, destroying virtually every old building on Kefalonia, Ithaca, and Zakynthos. Fiskardo, at the northernmost tip of the island, was the sole village to escape intact — its Venetian-era architecture preserved by a quirk of geology that the rest of the island was not afforded.

The result is a harbour that looks much as it did three centuries ago. Colourful neoclassical houses line the waterfront. Wooden caïques rock at the quay alongside modern yachts. A handful of tavernas serve fresh fish at tables that overhang the water. It is one of the most beautiful working harbours in Greece — and arriving by private boat, rather than road, is the way it was always meant to be approached.

Dafnoudi Beach

A short distance by sea from Fiskardo, Dafnoudi is one of northern Kefalonia's most celebrated beaches — a long sweep of smooth white pebbles backed by cypress trees and the kind of water that renders description inadequate. The pale green shading to deep turquoise, the clarity that lets you count pebbles at depth, the complete absence of development along the shore.

There is no road to Dafnoudi. It is reached by boat, or not at all. On a private charter, you arrive early, before any crowd has assembled, and the beach belongs to you.

Afales Beach

Tucked into a sheltered bay of the Érissos peninsula, Afales offers calm, shallow water in a setting of exceptional natural quiet. The beach is small enough that it rewards an early arrival and a private boat — by midday in high season, those with the patience to reach it by land have often made the same calculation.

The water here is genuinely remarkable: shallow enough for children, clear enough for snorkelling, and coloured in that particular shade of pale green-blue that defines the northern Ionian at its best.

Koimilia Beach

Koimilia sits further along the peninsula, accessible from the water but hidden from the road. The beach is quieter still — a pocket of stone and water that most visiting yachts pass without stopping. Our captain knows where to anchor.

The surrounding coastline here has a raw, ungroomed quality that becomes increasingly rare in the Greek islands. Scrubland reaches the water's edge. The hillside above holds no development, no sunbeds, no beach bar. It is the Ionian as it exists away from the postcard.

Nitsi Beach

At the southern edge of our northern Kefalonia circuit, Nitsi completes the day with a final swimming stop in water of extraordinary depth of colour. The beach is pebble, the surroundings dramatic, and the light in the afternoon — after a full day on the water — has the quality that photographers travel weeks to find.

The Cruise in Practice

We depart Nydri early in the morning, crossing south toward the northern tip of Kefalonia through the channel that separates the islands. The crossing takes roughly ninety minutes depending on conditions — a comfortable journey with the coastlines of Lefkada, Meganisi, and Ithaca visible along the way.

The day divides naturally into the harbour visit at Fiskardo and four beach stops, with unhurried time at each. Lunch can be taken at a Fiskardo taverna, or we can anchor in a quiet bay and eat on board.

The return to Nydri is timed for the late afternoon, arriving as the light on the water turns gold.

Practical Notes

The Kefalonia cruise is one of our longer crossings, and the day is best appreciated by those who want to experience a destination rather than simply pass through it. We recommend an early departure — around 09:00 from Nydri — to maximise time at the northern beaches before the afternoon wind picks up.

Sea conditions in the channel between Lefkada and Kefalonia can vary. Our captain monitors conditions and adjusts the route accordingly. In very occasional circumstances, the crossing may be modified — we will always inform you in advance.
