Monolithi is a long, west-facing beach north-west of Preveza that looks straight out at the setting sun. The AURA Sunset Cruise leaves Preveza Port, sails out of the gulf and along the coast to Monolithi, and anchors just offshore for golden hour. Three hours, your group only, with fuel and private-label wine included.
Where Monolithi Beach is
Monolithi Beach stretches for kilometres along the coast north-west of Preveza, facing the open Ionian. Because it faces west, nothing stands between the beach and the sunset: on a clear evening the sun goes down straight into the sea in front of it.
You can drive there — the beach has road access, and on summer days it is a favourite with locals and visitors from Preveza. In the evening, as the day crowd leaves, it becomes much quieter. Seen from a boat anchored offshore, with the whole length of the beach and the hills behind it in view, it feels like a different place.
The route from Preveza Port
The cruise starts at Preveza Port, at the mouth of the Amvrakikos Gulf. The first part of the trip takes you out of the gulf entrance, past the town waterfront and the old fortifications, into open water. From there the captain turns north along the coast towards Monolithi.
The timing is planned so that you reach the beach as the light starts to soften. The captain anchors just off the shore, in a spot chosen for the evening's conditions, and there is time for a swim before the sun goes down.
The sunset moment
About half an hour before sunset, the light changes quickly. The sea turns from blue to silver and then gold, and the long line of the beach catches the last warm light. When the sun reaches the horizon, there is nothing in the way — just open sea.
Then you head back to Preveza in the blue light after sunset, with the town lights coming on along the waterfront.
