Porto Katsiki is reached by car and 100 cliff steps (busy in peak season), by shared group boat tour (30–45 minutes at the beach, 40–100 passengers), or by private charter (9am departure, stay as long as you want). For groups of 6 or more, private charter per-person costs are often comparable to a premium group tour.
The Access Problem
Porto Katsiki is one of Greece's most famous beaches — and one of its most awkward to reach. It sits on the southwestern edge of Lefkada, at the base of sheer white limestone cliffs that offer no easy overland route to the water. There are essentially three ways to get there, and each offers a completely different experience of the same beach.
Option 1: Drive and Walk Down the Steps
The most common approach. You drive to the clifftop car park — around 45 minutes from Lefkada Town, 30 from Nydri — and descend approximately 100 steps cut into the rock face.
Advantages: You go on your own schedule. No booking required. The view from the top, before descending, is genuinely spectacular and worth photographing in itself.
Disadvantages: In July and August, the car park fills by 9am — arrive before then or face a long wait. The steps are steep and uneven: manageable with some care, but difficult with full beach gear, and not suitable for young children or anyone with mobility limitations. You arrive on the beach at the same time as everyone else who drove.
If you choose this route: arrive before 9am or after 4pm. The midday window — when the light is best and the view most dramatic — is also when the beach is most crowded.
Option 2: Shared Group Boat Tour
Several operators run full-day shared excursions from Nydri and Vassiliki that include Porto Katsiki as one stop among several. These boats typically carry between 40 and 100 passengers.
Advantages: No driving, no parking, no steps. The boat anchors close to the cliff and you swim or take a tender to the beach. Prices are relatively low — typically €25–45 per person for a full day including other stops.
Disadvantages: Fixed departure and return times with no flexibility. Time at Porto Katsiki is typically 30–45 minutes before the boat moves on to the next stop. You share the experience — and the water in front of the beach — with dozens of other passengers. Multiple group tour boats often arrive at Porto Katsiki simultaneously, which recreates the crowd problem by sea rather than by road.
Option 3: Private Boat Charter
A private charter gives you the opposite of a group tour in almost every respect. The boat carries your group only, leaves when you choose, and stays as long as you want.
Advantages: You can reach Porto Katsiki by mid-morning — before the first tour boats appear — and have the anchorage essentially to yourselves. You stay for as long as you want. You can combine Porto Katsiki with Egremni (which group tours rarely visit, as it requires a longer transit) and control your entire day.
Disadvantages: Higher upfront cost per booking. For small groups — two or three people — the per-person cost is significantly higher than a shared tour.
The economics for larger groups: Private Lefkada charters are priced per boat, not per person. For groups of 6 or more, the per-person cost begins to approach — and sometimes match — a premium group excursion. At that point, you are comparing a 30-minute shared stop with a full flexible day.

The Honest Recommendation
For solo travellers and couples on a budget: drive early (before 8:30am) or take a shared group tour and accept the constraints. Either works.
For groups of four or more who want the uncrowded experience: calculate the private option properly before ruling it out. The per-person gap narrows significantly at larger group sizes, and the difference in experience is not marginal.
For anyone who wants to see both Porto Katsiki and Egremni on the same day: a private boat is the only realistic option. Egremni has no road access at all since the 2015 landslide, and group tours almost never include it.
