Private Boat vs Day Trip to Paxos: Which Is Worth It?

By AURA Private Yachting ·

An organized day trip to Paxos costs less per person but puts you on a boat with 30-50 strangers on a fixed schedule. A private boat costs more as a total, but splits across your group — and the experience is fundamentally different: your own timing, your own stops, your own pace for the whole day.

What an organized day trip actually looks like

Organized Paxos day trips depart from Lefkada, Preveza, or Corfu on large catamarans or tourist motorboats carrying 30-60 passengers. A typical itinerary: depart 08:00, sail to Antipaxos (45-minute swim stop), continue to Gaios (90 minutes ashore), pass the west coast caves at distance, return. Total: 10-11 hours, most of it in transit.

The guide announces stops through a PA system. Swim stops are timed. At Gaios, you're given 90 minutes and released with the rest of the group. You cannot ask the boat to wait while you finish your coffee.

What a private boat actually looks like

A private boat charter means the vessel — captain included — is yours for the day. No other passengers board. You depart when you want (within reason), stop where you choose, spend as long as you like at each location, and adjust the plan as the day unfolds.

If the sea caves are particularly good that morning, you stay longer. If you find a quiet cove on the west coast that isn't on anyone's map, you anchor there. If someone in your group wants an extra swim stop, you take it.

Cost comparison: the honest numbers

Organized Paxos day trips typically cost €70-100 per person, depending on the operator and departure point.

AURA private cruise to Paxos & Antipaxos: €650 for the whole boat, up to 11 guests, 10 hours.

The price is the same whether you are 2 or 11 — there is no charge per guest, so the larger your group, the better the value.

For groups of 5 or more, a private boat is cost-competitive with organized tours. For 6-7 people, it's cheaper — and the experience is not comparable.

Flexibility: the real difference

Organized trip: the boat goes where it goes, when it goes. The sea caves are viewed from outside. Swim stops are at fixed locations for fixed durations. Gaios visit is compressed into 90 minutes shared with 50 other people.

Private boat: the caves can be entered. You can swim inside Ipapanti. At Gaios, you stay until you're ready to leave. If you want to skip one stop entirely and spend more time elsewhere, that's a conversation you can have with the captain.

Experience: crowds and pace

On an organized trip in peak season, Voutoumi beach receives multiple boatloads of 30-50 people per hour during the midday window. You're swimming in a crowd.

A private boat arriving at 09:00 finds Voutoumi almost empty. You can spend an hour there before the organized trips arrive, or leave before they do. The same beach, in the same turquoise water, feels like a private cove.

When to choose an organized trip

  • You're travelling solo or as a couple with no budget for private charter
  • You genuinely just want a quick look at Paxos and Antipaxos without deeper exploration
  • Budget is the primary constraint and the group is too small to make private charter affordable

When to choose a private boat

  • Your group is 4 or more people (cost becomes competitive)
  • You have children — the private space and flexible schedule are invaluable
  • You want to actually enter the sea caves, not just see them from outside
  • You care about arriving at beaches before the crowds
  • You want the day to feel like yours, not a managed tour
